There’s always some debate about how much political puffery our elected officials really believe. After all, Tom Clancy summed it up best for us through likable-yet-sleazy political hack Jeffery Pelt in the Hunt for Red October: “Listen, I’m a politician – which means I’m a cheat and a liar, and when I’m not kissing babies I’m stealing their lollipops. But it also means I keep my options open.”
So, what can we really believe of all this blather? It’s fun to joke about the stupid things our leaders say, for instance, at his nomination acceptance speech, then-candidate Obama said, “This was the moment, when the rise of the oceans began to slow and the planet began to heal…” or in a radio interview a short while later, when asked about tensions in teh Middle East, he said, “the day I’m inaugurated, muslim hostility will ease,” or when he used “I” or “my” a record-setting number of times when telling the American people that Osama bin Laden was finally dead at his hands (or at the hands of Seal Team Six, but who’s counting?).
But that’s all just political posturing, right? No one man is so narcissistic as to believe that he alone can bring a nation together, heal a planet, overcome centuries of hate or single-handedly revive an economy.
This limited-edition flag painting is for sale on barackobama.com, and the President’s Twitter account was hyping it yesterday:

So… no red states or blue states, just one nation under Obama? That’s inspiring.
Speaking of political gobbledy-gook, remember when President Obama said, “we may call ourselves Democrats and Republicans, but we are always Americans first.”
I guess that’s another thing he says but doesn’t really believe. How can he, when clearly the only Americans he celebrates are the ones willing to defile our country’s flag in hero-worship?
No person, no elected official, no hero, no soldier, no citizen, is bigger than the flag, the symbol of America. This is the first sign of dangerous fascism, when age-old patriotic traditions and signs of love of country are replaced by symbols of the leader or party in power.
Wake up, my friends, because this is a very disturbing sign of the times – if you’re not bothered by it, perhaps that’s the most disturbing sign of all.
Note: an American flag should never bear “any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature,” according to U.S. flag code. Additionally, U.S. Flag Code-Title 4, Ch. 1, Sec. 3 prohibits the “Use of flag for advertising purposes.
